The Ingredients of A Great IT Cover Letter
You need to keep in mind here that the IT cover letter would be most often than not sent email. This is why there are a few things that you need to observe if you want to create the best possible impression:

Keep is short – people scanning job application on the computer do not have much patience with never ending cover letters. The perfect IT cover letter should not exceed three paragraphs; each paragraph should not have more than six lines.

Comfortable styles – always use a comfortable-to-read style and format. The best font would be Arial or Times New Roman and size should be 10-12. Avoid too large or too small fonts. Never send a cover letter in cursive font. Avoid color highlights; use bold where necessary but keep it to the minimum.

Easy and engaging language – the IT cover letter would definitely need to complement the CV attached and hence contain a certain amount of technical matter in it. However, to the extent possible keep it simple so a layman can read and understand it as well as an IT professional would. Chances could be that a layman would scan the letters first – and your letter should not land in the recycle bin because he/she could not understand what were you saying.

Give your coordinates – most computer professionals do not think outside a computer. However, in many cases the recruiter might want to contact you in the real world. Ensure that you have your coordinates and the time when you would be available clearly written in the IT cover letter you are sending. In case you are applying overseas, ensure that you mention the country and city and the time according to GMT so the recruiter could calculate the time accordingly.

Repeat the cover letter as an attachment along with the CV – in many cases a computer operator scans and downloads the CVs for the recruiter to read. In that case, the cover letter than you sent as an email (as the body of the email) would not reach the desk of the recruiter. Ensure that it does by attaching a copy of the cover letter along with the CV so when the attachments are downloaded and printed your job application should be complete with the IT cover letter.
